Siwan & various courses

Siwan Information

The language is one of the most common barriers for foreigners / Egyptians living or staying for a long time in the oasis of Siwa. Although almost all Siwans do speak Arabic, often among each other they speak Siwi, leaving others puzzled. ConnectIn Groups is now offering the course “Sawal Siwi?” (do you speak Siwan?) to overcome this barrier.

Siwa is the only place in Egypt where Siwan, the Egyptian dialect of the Tamazight language, is spoken. Siwans (originally called Berbers) migrated long ago from countries like Morocco, Algeria, Tunis and Libya, and although over the centuries many customs have been lost, the language is very much still alive.

Mistakenly, Siwan / Tamazight is often confused with a dialect of Arabic, but it must be noted that Siwan is really a language of its own. Although in Egypt it is merely a spoken language, in countries like Morrocco, with support of the Royal Institute of the Amazigh Culture, much attention is given to keep the script alive as well.

Siwan Class Structure

The class at ConnectIn Groups is given by Mr. Youssef, a native Siwan, who has been working as an English teacher for many years (making the course accessible for those who do not speak Arabic as well). Mr. Youssef has a clear structure for acquisition during the course, as there are no ready student books which we can use. The class will be taking place once a week, for 2 hours.

Various Courses Information

ConnectIn Groups continuously offers  group or private courses in Spanish and Dutch, taught by a native speaker. These foreign languages are taught according to the guidelines of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment), which was set up by the Council of Europe as the main topic of the project “Language Learning for European Citizenship”.  The primary goal is to provide a method which applies to all languages in Europe. Language knowledge in measured in six reference levels (A1; A2; B1; B2; C1; C2). ConnectIn Groups offers up to the level B2.

ConnectIn Groups also offers (temporary scheduled) courses in other foreign languages like Italian, German and French. Group courses are of A1 or A2 level, higher levels can be provided on a private-class basis. In the summer of 2016 Italian was offered, in 2017 French was taught, and in 2018 we will be focusing on Spanish.
